                        Geodesy; Especially Relating to the Great Trignometrical Survey of India by Lt. Colonel Alexander Strange, published in the Journal of the Royal United Institution. Volume vi. 1863. This is a separate and presumably unique supplement containing Strange’s address to the meeting of the RUSI that was chaired by Sir George Everest in 1862. The binding is hand-sewn and there are no wraps or covers. Size 22 by 14 cm. 28 pages plus three engravings and a folding map. Above the title is a note in ink that states the Everest was in the chair. One engraving is of the type of theodolite used in the survey and another depicts the measurement of a base line. The map is a Skeleton Map of India shewing the Great Trignometrical Survey as completed to the year 1856, size 41 by 32 cm., on a scale of 128 miles to the inch. Uncoloured. A key gives details of over 30 places where longitudinal, meriodional, Himalayan and other the series of maps were triangulated. Text has occasional chips to the edge and the front page is dull, but after the front page the rest of the text is clear and the plates and maps in Good to VG condition.
