The Severn Tunnel: Its Construction and Difficulties
Book Description
Second edition, frontispiece (Sir John Hawkshaw), 188pp, 4 futher portraits, numerous illustrations (some folding out), light blue cloth, black illustration to upper board, gilt titles to spines. Some soradic foxing to the contents and fading of the gilt titles as usual, otherwise an excellent example of Walker's classic work, one of the best we've seen.

Built by the GWR between 1873 and 1886 the 4.3 mile Severn Tunnel took 14 years to build. Work started in 1873 and all went well until 1879 when severe flooding became a major problem such that the tunnel was not completed until 1885 with the first trains running through it in late 1886.
