                        Published by Passmore and Alabaster, London, 1889, 10th thousand, (title first published 1885).  Publishers pictorial boards. Blue boards with gilt and black lettering and red borders and gilt decoration. 7.25ins x 5.25ins, patterned endpapers. Volume one (A-L): viii, 334pp, 8pp book adverts. Volume two (M - Z): [iv], 367pp, 8pp book adverts. Spurgeon (1834-1892) was a Baptist preacher noted for his oratory at the Metropolitan Tabernacle.  Spines of both volumes darkened. Front board of vol 1 a bit grubby. G+ nr VG. Scarce in this early edition.
