Manuscripts: “On the Difficulties of Keith’s Treatise on Globes” and “ On the Difficulties of Mr Keith’s Mensuration” [1842]
Book Description
RYALL, Thomas. Manuscript critiques on the popular work "A New Treatise on the Use of the Globes, or, a Philosophical View of the Earth and Heavens" by Thomas Keith, [1759-1824] an educational textbook explaining geography, astronomy, and the practical use of terrestrial and celestial globes, designed to teach youth about Earth's shape, motion, and the heavens through definitions, problems, and exercises. A second manuscript treats with Keith’s volume on Mensuration. [i] On the Globes: Approx 19 cm x 15 cm landscape format notebook in original worn thick paper wraps. Pp74 of closely written text in ink in a readable hand with many diagrams with decorative sun drawings. Some loss through damp to the ink on some pages, the majority of the loss still decipherable. [ii] On Mensuration: Larger portrait format notebook, bound in the original worn thick paper wraps. Approx 30.5 x 19 cm. The corners dog eared, and the covers worn and with pen trials and the name “Eliz Ryall” to the front cover. This manuscript had fared rather worse on it’s journey through time. Pp 86 of mathematical workings and diagrams in a readable hand. Some loss through damp, although readable, the odd tear but largely complete. Two curious manuscripts. We have been unable to find details about Thomas (or Elizabeth Ryall). Our researchers have found Ryalls but largely from agricultural backgrounds, offering the intriguing possibility that Ryall was a working man rather than an academic. This is speculation ; perhaps other researchers might find more.
