Book Description

Letters from Japan Being a Description of the Experiences of the Honorary Commercial Commission of the Pacific Coast which visited Japan at the invitation of the Chambers of Commerce of the Cities of Yokohama, Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Kobe by Mary R Lowman, privately published and printed by Lowman and Hanford 1908. In soft card covers with Yapp edges and original red silk ties. 40 pages. The title page also has Mary Lowman’s signature and a dedication with the dates October 17th to November 4th 1908 printed beneath. The text is basically a day by day record of Lowman’s travels in Japan, her eye-witness account of the country and her encounters with various prominent figures. It culminates with a visit to the Emperor’s Palace to witness a military review and later to enjoy a close encounter with the royal family. She travelled with her husband, J D Lowman, an American businessman who had been invited to Japan to see the country during the chrysanthemum season. The top margins of the last few pages and front cover have some evidence of historic damp but these are clear and above the text. Offered in a modern presentation box with title to the spine. Good to VG condition.
