                                            Dealer Notes
“... [the] object [of geology] is to observe and describe the structure of the external crust of the globe; and ... to trace the successive changes that have taken place upon the earth, and the various laws, or modes of action, which the Author of Nature has seen fit to employ in effecting these changes.” (cf. author's introduction). Its dedication to Professor Adam Sedgwick, one of the founders of the modern field, demonstrates the author’s commitment to his subject.
Ansted, a professor of geology in his own right, has two interesting connections to America. First, he wrote a field guide for British prospectors leaving for the California gold rush. Second, he was the geologist who correctly identified the large coal deposits in what is now West Virginia and invested in mining ventures there. The town of Ansted, WV, is named for him.
