This symposium brought together some of the best minds in the field to discuss a topic “... which is not only of great practical importance, but is also intensely interesting to scientists in four different fields, i.e. physicists, physiologists, psychologists and biochemists.” (It is still early in the emerging field of biophysics ...)
Paper and discussion topics ranged over how the eye interpreted physical light/colour; the function of colour-mixing and -matching; the physiology of the eye and perception; the subjectivity of colour; and the defects of colour vision. The speakers were from major university, government, corporate and private laboratories and institutes from Europe, America, and the USSR.
The NPL, an institution founded to provide measurement standards for the UK, is a world-renowned metrology laboratory. In its early years it also tested air, road and water vehicles, and provided materials testing for the government and industry. Its researchers were instrumental in the development of radar, early computers, atomic clocks, computer networking technologies, *and* measurement and material standards.
