A series of lessons written for the future King Gustav III of Sweden by one of his tutors, many are in the form of fables, some are described as the “... first fairy tales written for Swedish children.”
Tessin, a prominent member of the Court and former Ambassador to Paris, was one of two tutors to the young Prince, at ages 4-10 or so (1750-56). He steeped him in the French culture and language, and worked to educate him to the classical ideal of an enlightenment prince. Translated from the Swedish by J. Berkenhout, this gives us a peek into his methods.
