Elizabeth Strutt published at least six novels (aside from other books on Christian philosophy and a work called The feminine soul) between 1806 and 1859, a remarkably long writing career by Victorian standards; two of them were published as “Mrs. Byron,” her name by her first marriage. She also travelled abroad, and wrote at least two other narratives of her travels in France and Italy. This is her account of a stay, with her husband, the painter and engraver Jacob George Strutt, in Switzerland, initially at Lausanne, and later in Vevay. The couple toured around, both on foot and by carriage, sometimes accompanied by their son. The lithograph frontispieces and title-pages in this copy are uncoloured; other copies we have seen contain coloured versions.
