The present booklet is an offprint of Buchanan’s lecture at the Friday Evening Meeting before the Royal Institution of Great Britain. Buchanan was a member of the Challenger expedition, and his opening paragraphs speak about the observations of ice made when the Challenger was in the Antarctic. Buchanan also discusses observations from the Alps, notably relating to the Morteratsch Glacier.
