Book Description

An autograph letter from the geologist, Adam Sedgwick [1785-1873] concerning a memorial to his friend, Dr William Ainger. Sir, I yesterday received your kind letter containing a draft for two guineas & a list of addresses of the pupils of the late Dr Ainger. For both of which I am much obliged to you. You will be happy to hear that the casts have been put in the hands of Mr Lough, the celebrated sculptor & that he considers them good authority for a cast. He hopes however to receive visits from those who knew Dr Ainger, & I have already written to Miss Ainger for a profile likeness of him. Should you... visit [?], have the kindness to give my condolences to the relations of my late friend, believe me Sir your faithful servant, A Sedgwick The letter to an unnamed correspondent refers to Dr William Ainger, of whom John Graham Lough, the sculptor would produce a marble memorial now in St Bees Priory Church. Given that Ainger died in 1840, the letter must date from that time. Ainger [1785-1840] was a lifelong friend of Sedgwick's, who was, as this letter suggests, active in fundraising for Ainger's monument, which can be found in St Bees' Priory, St Bees, Cumbria (Cumberland as it was then). Ainger was the first Principal of St Bees Theological College which trained clergy for the diocese of Durham. His correspondence with Sedgwick is held in Cambridge. Good condition. Envelope folds. Minor spotting at lower margin.
