178x112mm. Single sheet. Single crease to the centre for folding. It reads: 'Dear Sir, | I thank you for your letter | of 22ndAugust. I regret that | I could not answer it more | promptly, but have been from | home. | I am grateful to you for | your kind suggestion, but | cannot manage to write the | study you suggest. | Yours sincerely, | J. Masefield.' A concise, but polite letter written entirely in Masefield's hand.
