Book Description

Limited edition, 49/100, signed by Michael Horovitz and 32 other artists and photographers who contributed what the blurb on the back inner flap calls "a lavish and varied series of nearly 100 pictorial embroideries specially executed". The dust jacket front cover drawing is by Peter Blake: David Hockney's work is a naked player taking a shower, opposite a reference to "Yeovil yobboes" (well, this is being written as a Somerset book fair highlight). The book itself is in extremely good condition, with just a few minor signs of age and shelfwear. The dust jacket - as is nearly always the case with this title - is patchily and lightly browned, as if it's been unsuccessfully toasted. This is generally held to be due to the laminate used. There's a small closed tear, about 6 millimetres long, to the upper top edge of the back cover and three superficial scratches to the aforementioned laminate. Not price-clipped. The jacket is now in a protective sleeve.
Dealer Notes
A highly unusual romp, both coarse and intellectual, through the world of what it now feels rather quaint to call "association football", taking that world as an Eliotic "objective correlative" for the state of Britain. Michael Horovitz covers a lot of ground (and indeed grounds, not just Molineux) from the Anglo-Saxon poem The Wanderer up to the notorious Smethwick by-election of 1964 and beyond. "An Epic of Britannia, In Twelve Books, With a Resurrection and a Life, for Poetry United". Excerpts were read by the author on John Peel's Night Ride. Sections also appeared in the Wolverhampton Express & Star, though one wonders which bits they chose to serialise: there are passages in here which no local newspaper would print!

Artists and photographers contributing to the book - aside from Horovitz himself - are Peter Blake, Michael Bloom, Jeff Cloves, Mal Dean, R. Elson, P.G. Findlay, Michael Foreman, John Furnival, Bob Godfrey, Jeff Goldner, Richard Hamilton, Adrian Henri, David Hockney, Marigold Hodgkinson, Pete Hoida, Patrick Hughes, Paul Kaplan, Mike McInnerney, Pete Morgan, Stephen Morris, Gabi Nasemann, Jeff Nuttall, David Oxtoby, Tom Phillips, Adam Ritchie, Nick Roberts, Ron Sandford, Colin Self, Shepard Sherbell, Feliks Topolski and Michael Tyzack.
