Book Description

Full title reads: The HIVE of Ancient and Modern Literature; a collection of essays, narratives, allegories, and instructive compositions. Selected by the Late Sol. Hodgson. The third edition, embellished with a number of engravings on wood, by T. Bewick and L. Clennell, both of Newcastle. Newcastle: printed by and for S. Hodgson, and the booksellers in general, 1806. 8vo. [viii], 340. Woodcut illustrations throughout. A little foxed, otherwise in good condition, with all pages intact. Later half morocco, all edges gilt, raised bands and contrasting labels, marbled endpapers to match. With a hand-written dedication, the Honorable Mr Justice Ridley, from the L[aw] C[ollege] of Aberystwyth, Mansion House, Newcastle, February 1912, and the bookplate of J. Creswell to the front paste-down.
Dealer Notes
An interesting provenance: Creswell was a well-known collector of Bewick, who had his bookplate designed in so that it looks very similar to a Bewick illustration. Presumably, the rather nice binding was commissioned for Creswell. We have not come across Bewick items from the Creswell collections before, and believe that they must appear very rarely on the market. Tattersfield 2.287c. ~ POST FREE ~
