Telepathy: An Archive of Research by Dennis Bardens, British Journalist & Intelligence Operative
Book Description
A fascinating collection of research into extra-sensory perception, with a focus on telepathy, the phenomena of mind, intention or feeling travelling a distance beyond the body. A large portion of the collection focuses on Russian/Soviet investigation into telepathic phenomena, which is of particular interest given Bardens’ background as an agent for the British intelligence services during WWII. After the war, Bardens also spent time in the field liaising with the Czechoslovakian government.
It is now well documented that the USA and Soviet forces took ideas of extra sensory perception seriously during the Cold War. Both dedicated a significant amount of time and resources researching these subjects, with the intention of using them for military purposes. This included the C.I.A’s Stargate Project, set up to investigate psychic and anomalous phenomena, ‘to include parapsychological and related biophysical interactions, (e. g. telepathy, remote viewing and psychokinesis.’ In Russia they had also demonstrated the reality of ESP in rigorously controlled laboratory conditions. As a result, the U.S.A and the U.K were desperate to learn what the Soviets had discovered from their elaborate research into the mysteries of the universe, consciousness and the nature of the human mind.
A small number of papers, which appear to be intelligence documents, detail Bardens’ investigations into Soviet research on psychic phenomena. A typescript discusses the events of an agent who ‘went over to Leningrad and saw Prof. Vasiliev’. This would be Leonid Leonidovich Vasiliev, who ran the Soviet Union’s first state sponsored ESP laboratory, the Special Laboratory for Parapsychology at The University of Leningrad. Elsewhere in the archive, there is a brief mention of ‘moonship telepathy tests’, of which Swedish born engineer Olav Jonsso and astronaut Edgar Mitchell carried out during the Apollo 14 moon mission. Also, there is the assertion that ‘telepathy has reached a point of development comparable to that of radar in 1937 and electronic control systems in 1950’.
Bardens was a good friend of Austin Osman Spare and a member of the Society for Psychical Research. He was also one of the original creators of the BBC programme Panorama.
