It describes and illustrates many new species of plants that the Austrian botanist and explorer Theodor Kotschy (1813 -1866) collected from 'free negroes' during his travels from 1837 to 1839 while he was companion to the Austrian geologist, Joseph Ritter von Russegger (1802-1863).
