In 1915, along with husband, Alan – “the first modern astrologer” – Bessie Leo (1858–1931) founded the Astrological Lodge of London. Like her husband, who was also a prominent Theosophist, she published widely on astrology and was key to its promotion in the West. Bessie Leo was President of the Astrological Institute, as well as the resurrected Astrological Society (see Kim Farnell).
Based in Brick Street, Piccadilly, The Women’s Printing Society was founded by Emma Paterson and Emily Faithful; it was incorporated as a co-operative in 1878. The WPS was significant for the British suffrage movement, both publishing feminist tracts and facilitating women’s entry and on-going work in the trade of printing.
