[Politeuphuia] Antiquity, or the wise instructor being a collection of the most valuable admonitions and sentences
Book Description
8vo: xlvi, [2], 354. Contemporary half roan on marbled boards, spine worn, front hinge weak, a little marking to head of title page, occasional light mark, but overall internally clean. An interesting, and unusual work in commerce. The prelims run title page, dedication, preface, then an extensive list of subscribers to the first, and to the second editions, then a contents leaf and the text itself, which covers moral sayings and thoughts under numerous headings: eg. charity, change, poetry, famine, fear, gluttony, God, goodness, and so on, culled from classical writers as well as later ones. ESTC suggests that it is drawn from much earlier compilations, variously by Nicholas Ling, or by J. Bodenham. Either way, a rare and interesting provincial printing. ESTC N475769.
