Knight first visited the Arctic aboard the whaler Polar Bear in 1915. He then joined the Canadian Arctic Expedition under Vilhjalmur Stefansson. The present work uses Knight's diaries to describe both these expeditions. Knight himself died in 1923 of scurvy during Stefansson's fateful Wrangel Island expedition.
