ORIGIN OF SPECIES
Book Description
WITH EXTENSIVE ANNOTATIONS: the front flyleaf has detailed notes, as does its verso and half title and title page. Then, from page 421 until 429 (that is, the final conclusions) there are detailed annotations to the page margins with extensive underlining. The text is otherwise clean.
Dealer Notes
A struggle between religion and science. The writer of the annotations appears to be making an extremely close reading of the text in order to be clear as to exactly what Darwin is saying, including the relationship between Darwin's claims and Holy Writ. There is a small clipping from a newspaper pasted in to the top left-hand paste-down with the quotation "I see no good reason why the views given in this volume The Origin of the Species shock the religious feeling of anyone". The writing is small but neat, and would bear close study. Please see photos. Darwin's theories were profoundly important in establishing a new debate between science and religion, here there appears to be a reader attempting to work through these issues. A record of a most interesting encounter, unusual to have recorded in this way. It is not clear who the annotator is, but he seems to be a learned and thoughtful man. The annotations are not dated, but appear to be contemporary with this edition, or shortly after. Please see photos.
