Notes on the Natural History of the Bell Rock
Book Description
With an introduction by James Murdoch. First edition. Scarce.
The Bell Rock Lighthouse is world's oldest surviving sea-washed lighthouse, and has been described as one the 'seven wonders of the industrial world'. It was built by Robert Stevenson (grandfather of novelist Robert Louis Stevenson) between 1807 and 1810. J.M. Campbell had been assistant Lightkeeper, and his natural history observations, covering the period April 1901 to April 1904 were first published as articles in the local Press. 'These desultory notes were originally undertaken at the instigation of an invalid friend, desirous of a closer acquaintance with our lonely environment.' - Preface.
