Traduit sur l’invitation de l’auteur sur les cinquieme et sixieme edition anglaises Augmentee d’un nouveau chapitre et de nombreuses notes et additions de l’auteur. Par J. J. Moulinie. DARWIN’s FAVOURED EDITION. Original cloth, a little rubbed, spine a little wrinkled, but sound and bright, pp xx, 612, folding plate present to page 120. Original endpapers present, rather marked to lower external corners, otherwise a good copy, with all papers intact, half-title present, edges uncut, partially unopened.

Darwin had tentatively given the French rights Clemence Royer, who was enthusiastic about this work, and her translation appeared in 1862. Whilst he does not appear to have found her French itself greatly at fault, he was dismayed at her additions, which he felt misinterpreted his position, particularly where he had preferred to remain equivocal. He therefore eventually worked with Reinwald to produce this edition, which included his later revisions, and explains in the preface printed in both English and French, that he will take any royalties from it in order that his motives should not be misinterpreted. An important work in the history of the printing and dissemination of Darwin’s Origin.
