Considered to be the most difficult to climb of the Himalayan peaks, Kangchenjunga was finally scaled by a British team led by the author in 1955, when Joe Brown and George Band reached the summit - though, in deference to the local belief that the summit was the home of a god the pair did not set foot on the actual summit (hence the book’s subtitle, The Untrodden Peak).
