This slim volume offers the first full account in English of the Duke of the Abruzzi’s achievements in the Arctic. In 1899, aboard the Polar Star, the crew of 20 sailed for Franz Josef Land, the base for their attempt on the North Pole. Umberto Cagni amd three other men attained a new farthest north - 86o 34’ - and the Polar Star itself attained the farthest north for a ship. A full version of the Duke’s expedition appeared as On the "Polar Star" in the Arctic Sea (1903), but was preceded by this extremely uncommon 1901 version.
