Alfred Philippson (1864 – 1953) German geologist and geographer. Was incarcerated in a Nazi concentration camp (1942–45) and survived the war partly thanks to his friend, Sven Hedin. Philippson and Hedin were fellow students of Ferdinand von Richthofen, German traveller, geographer, and scientist, who coined the term “silk route” and to whom this book is dedicated.
