Colorado: Its Gold and Silver Mines, Farms and Stock Ranges, and Health and Pleasure Resorts
Book Description
This book is the second edition of a popular 19th-century guide by Frank Fossett, who was both a geologist and an expert on mining. He put it together as a kind of promotional guide to show off everything Colorado had to offer, especially during its booming mining and settlement era.
Right from the title page, you get a sense of what it’s all about. It highlights Colorado’s gold and silver mines, points out the rich farmland and cattle ranges, and promotes the state's crisp mountain air and resorts as perfect for health and relaxation. And of course, it’s framed as a tourist’s guide for anyone wanting to explore the Rocky Mountains.
Back when it was published, the book would have been really appealing to a few different audiences: settlers and investors looking to cash in on the region’s mining and agricultural potential; travellers in search of scenic beauty and fresh air; and folks back East, or even in Europe, who were curious about the opportunities and adventures waiting out West.
