Hartree’s overview of the subject includes his work at the University of Pennsylvania on ENIAC, the first programmable digital computer. This copy belonged to Dennis W. Sciama (1926-99), author of Modern Cosmology (1971), who studied at Cambridge and Oxford, where his students included Stephen Hawking, Martin Rees, and John Barrow.
