Book Description

One of 50 signed copies on Japanese Vellum. [i-v], vii-xx, [1], 2-404pp. Quarto. Finely bound by Sangorski Sutcliffe & Zaehnsdorf in modern 3/4 brown morocco over brown cloth. Cloth edged in double gilt fillets on both boards. Spine in 6 compartments. Titles to second and third; remaining stamped in gilt. Raised bands tooled in gilt. Date stamped to foot of spine. Light shelfwear to bottom edge of boards. Corners lightly rubbed. Top edge gilt, remaining edges uncut. Engraved bookplate to front pastedown and small circular ink stamp to title page, else clean internally. Limited to 50 hand-numbered copies, this being #34. Signed by Meyer on limitation page. A handsome copy. Neate M92. Alpine Club Library Catalogue page 212. A finely bound example of the exceedingly scarce signed edition limited to 50 copies on Japanese Vellum of this classic of African Mountaineering. Meyer's expedition completed the first undisputed ascent of the Kibo Peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, thereby achieving the first ascent of the highest peak on the highest mountain of the African continent. Illustrated with 3 folding maps and 40 illustrations, many of which are full page photogravures and photographs. Chromolithograph frontis. A finely bound copy of a cornerstone of African mountaineering. Americana Exchange records only 2 unique copies of this limited edition as having sold at auction.
