Book Description

Hardback, modern half-calf, gilt morocco label to front board. Large folio, 47cm x 31.5cm. 3 works bound into 1 volume. TURKEY: Dated 1811, Title page, list of plates, 24 hand-colour aquatint plates (dated 1809-10, watermarked J. Whatman 1809), one double-page 'View of Contantinople.' EGYPT: Dated 1812, Title page, list of plates, 24 hand-colour aquatint plates (dated 1802, watermarked J. Whatman 1809). PALESTINE: Dated 1812, Title page, 8 hand-colour aquatint plates (2 dated 1803 - the rest undated, all watermarked J. Whatman 1809). Slightest wear to binding. Some creases down front and rear free end-paper. Minor sporadic spotting to contents, but generally clean. The German-Italian artist Luigi Mayer (1755-1803) was one of the foremost late 18th-century European painters of the Ottoman Empire. He was a close friend of Sir Robert Ainslie, British ambassador to Turkey between 1776 and 1792.
