[Turkey] Researches in Asia Minor, Pontus, and Armenia; with some account of their antiquities and geology. By William Hamilton, secretary to the Geological Society.
Book Description
First edition. Two volumes. Vol 1: xxvii [i], 544. Vol 2: viii [iv], 508, front blanks present. Frontis, five plates and small folding map to volume 1, large folding map by Arrowsmith, six plates and appendix with epigraphic inscriptions to volume 2. Contemporary half calf, with marbled boards (somewhat faded), and marbled edges, and original matching marbled endpapers, sometime skilfully rebacked, contrasting labels, somewhat foxed to prelims and occasionally near plates. Arrowsmith map repaired with early sellotape to front and rear without loss. A good example (but please note early clumsy repair to large map) of this important work. Hamilton travels very extensively arriving into Turkey via Smyrna (Izmir), then goes to Istanbul, and Bursa; then along the Black Sea coast to Trabzon, Erzurum, Kars, Samsun, Sinop, Tokat, Amasya, Ankara, and back to Izmir. Then, to Ephesus, Bodrum, Rhodes, Konya, and Karaman. A remarkable, clearly written account, one that traverses the great proportion of modern Turkey with many insightful observations on the peoples, landscape, geology, and also systematic description of the ancient remains. Blackmer 779.
