                        Hardback. lvi, 819. Substantial volume, 240 by 160mm (9½ by 6¼ inches), containing the dramatic works, masques, etc of the Jacobean poet Ben Jonson best known for his play Volpone. Full brown leather with gilt decoration to both boards. Raised bands to spine with gilt title and gilt decoration to the remaining compartments. Date of 1838 in gilt to tail of spine. Gilt to all edges. Marbled endpapers. Frontis portrait. Barry Cornwall was the pseudonym of writer Bryan Proctor who though little known now was at the centre of a literary circle all his life and to whom Thackeray dedicated Vanity Fair and Wilkie Collins dedicated The Woman In White. Proctor was also the father of Queen Victoria’s favourite poet Adelaide Anne Procter.
Leather faded to almost a red on the spine. Gilt is bright. Slightly bumped to corners. Faint marks to boards. Rubbed to edges but joints remain sound and firm. Dark water mark to prelims just catching the tip of the corner of the frontis portrait and the same to the illustration to the title page and marking several the central few inches of all the prelims.
