Dealer Notes
A very fine example, with an interesting contemporary provenance. Robert Elmhirst was vicar to Farnham and Brearton, a living seemingly worth £200 per annum, and was also Lord of the Manor of Fulletby. He was known to be interested in natural history, as was his wife who made collections of pressed flowers. Clearly, he was able to reconcile having Darwin in his library with his Anglicanism, so perhaps represented the liberal wing of the Church. It would be interesting to research more to see whether his papers or letters yield any thoughts on his natural history interest in relationship with his religious duties.
