The Punjab Frontier Force was initially known as the 'Punjab Irregular Force' and was created to protect the newly acquired frontier with Pakistan. It was known as 'Irregular' because it was outside the control of the East India Company's army and reported instead to the Chief Commissioner of the Punjab. Provenance: Captain L.V.
