The Making of Matthias
Book Description
Hardback. Romantic novel of rural life. 143pp.+ catalogues. Very attractively bound in blue cloth with Art Nouveau gilt illustrative and decorative lettering. Internally illustrated by Lucy Kemp-Welch with frontis., showing her usual specialism of horses, further plates as well as chapter head decorations. Art Nouveau style decorative title page presumably designed by a different hand. Yorkshireman J. S. Fletcher (1863-1935) was prolific in a range of fields including tales of rural life as here, and detective fiction. Gilt to all edges. 12 page illustrated catalogue of Bodley Head children’s books to the rear of the volume.
Decorative cloth and gilt details are very clean and bright. Foxed to title page and tissue guard protecting the frontis. Faint toning to the frontis and occasional scattered foxing to margins of text. Tanned to endpapers. Binding is sound.
