                        [First US edition, limited issue]; **#92 of 325 copies signed by the author/illustrator.** Beautifully illustrated with twenty woodcut plates by the author, plus one or two in-text cuts.  
Original glossy black cloth, lettered and ruled in silver, top edge silvered; lower corners a touch bumped, and with just a hint of rubbing; small smudges to pp.24-25; uneven mark on rear free endpaper (old rubber band?); contents fresh. From a Montreal heritage library: bookplate, small accession number at foot of p.1, embossed stamp on p.9 and neat ink stamp ("Not to leave library") on rear free endpaper; no other marks. Overall, a fine copy, though original issue slipcase not present.

                            Daglish, a British wood engraver noted for his natural history woodcuts, particularly those of birds, especially for illustrating classics by authors like W.H. Hudson, Henry David Thoreau and Viscount Grey of Fallodon.
