THE JOURNAL OF WILLIAM DOWSING Iconoclasm in East Anglia during the Civil War
Book Description
During the Civil War in 1643 &1644 the Suffolk Puritan William Dowsing visited nearly 100 churches in Cambridgeshire, and about 150 in Suffolk, smashing stained glass and other 'superstitious' imagery, destroying altar rails & steps, pulling down crucifixes & crosses - a campaign that included the chapels of the Cambridgeshire colleges. His journal is a church-by-church record of this destruction. This Journal serves as a fascinating & important source of information for those with a special interest in East Anglian churches & religious conflicts of the Civil War period.
