                        ‘The Court Of The Gentiles Or A  Discourse touching the Original of Human Literature, both Philolgie and Philosophie, from the Scripture and Jewish Church’ ~ by Theophilus Gale; pub by Tho Gilbert 1669; large 8vo - 6” x 8”, original full calf boards but rebound with newer spine with 4 raised band and title in gilt; there is some damage to bottom of the spine. Leather covering is glued onto inside front and back boards, several inside pps are 90% missing, then a page with dark brown staining and on verso of page is some writing from many centuries past; then the title page which is also damaged; a more recent pencil note on inside page notes ‘collated perfect’. Following the title page the book starts with 28pp (6pps of Adverts, 9 pps of Poems, 10pps of Synopsis, 2pps of Scripture Explicated, 1 pp of A Memorandum for the Reader); then 398pps of the main book with 2 end papers 1 of which is quite torn, and another end paper which has had 75% torn off. There is a slight split on the joint between p144/145, but the stitching is still strong. Book is in quite a delicate state.  Beside the damage already noted the main contents of the book are in good condition with a minimum of foxing.  References noted in Wing G136 & Madan 2830  Scarce
