A pleasing first edition copy of the prize-winning French children’s author Madame J. Colomb’s 1890 novel Scapegoat, in the attractive publisher’s binding, from the library of her near contemporary, the popular and prolific Victorian novelist for adults and children, Charlotte M. Yonge; in the year of publication Yonge herself published two novels: The Cunning Woman’s Grandson; a Tale of Cheddar a hundred years ago and The Slaves of Sabinus: Jew and Gentile.
A novelist associated with the high Anglicanism of the Oxford movement, Charlotte M. Yonge (1823-1901) had been educated by her father, and read Greek and Latin, alongside French. [ref: 3657]
