Moritz Retzsch (1779-1857) German painter and etcher, born in Dresden. Cotta commissioned Retzsch to illustrate Goethe's Faust, followed by this work, Schiller's Song of the Bell. Johann Christoph Friedrich (von) Schiller (1759-1805) German playwright, poet, and philosopher. During the last seventeen years of his life (1788–1805), Schiller and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe became close friends. Goethe wrote the epilogue to the "Song of the Bell" shortly after Schiller's death in 1805. Black and Armstrong published a second edition in 1837. This is the first edition commissioned by Cotta.
