COMPLETE SET OF NEWTON ON LIGHT in PHIL TRANS
Book Description
A complete set of Newton’s contributions on light to Philosophical Transactions. Volumes 5-13 bound as four, viz: 5-6 (1670-1671); 7-8 (1672-1773); 9-10 (1674-1675); 11-13 (1676-1685). One of the foundational contributions to modern science, and certainly amongst the most important series of articles ever published. Provenance: bookplate of N Vansittart (Fellow of the Royal Society: elected 1822) to front pastedowns, edges speckled red, booklabel Winnard’s Bequest to fly leaves, unobtrusive blind-stamps of the Winnard's Bequest Bequest, Free Public Library (dispersed and deaccessioned circa 2000).
Dealer Notes
There is only one auction record of the complete Newton series being sold, which went for $75,600 (approx. £56,000) at Christies 25th April 2022. Our example has the further benefit of the Phil Trans volumes up to 13, which include amongst many others in 1677, Leeuwenhoeck’s sensational article on living beings in water, which he called animalcula (number 133 pages 821-831). The early volumes of Philosophical Transactions are infrequent on the market: they were produced as monthly or bimonthly parts which were sent to Fellows, often irregularly. They were only later bound up either by the Fellows themselves using title pages supplied or by the printer for stock. They therefore had a limited sale at the time, and were often purchased and used for scholarly exchanges by the Royal Society.
