Book Description

SCHLOTEL Frederick Narrative of the burning of the 'Sarah Sands' screw steam ship, with the head quarters of H.M. 54th Regiment on board. By a late 54th officer London: Bemrose and Sons 1870 29 + (1)pp. 1st ed., engraved frontispiece, 8vo. Original lilac cloth with some fading, lettered in gilt on upper cover, all edges gilt. The Sarah Sands was a four-masted, iron-built screw-steamer chartered to take out troops to India. She left Portsmouth on 15th August 1857 packed with 14 officers, 354 men, a dozen women, and tons of ammunition and explosives. On 11th November about a 1000 miles off Mauritius, the ship caught fire but was saved and eventually reached Mauritius
