"The reception of Darwin in France was notoriously more muted than Germany, Denmark and some other European nations. There are 125 French works in the Valentine/Darwin Collection. Darwin's first translator of Origin of species in 1862 [VAL 575.8 D25o.f] was Clémence Royer whom Darwin described as "one of the cleverest and oddest women in Europe" although he thought it was unfortunate that she had not "known more of natural history".
