Penrose (1898-1974) investigated the causes of Down’s syndrome and similar congenital disorders. His lecture before the Royal Institution concludes “Personally, I like to think that new knowledge on human genetics, as it comes to hand, can best be used in the direct interests of individuals and their offspring according to the established canons of medical ethics”.
