Book Description

FIRST 2 VOLUME EDITION. Small Crown 4to. (9.3 x 6.6 inches). xxx, 439; xxii, 531 pp. Beautifully Illustrated with 36 fine full colour plates by Russell Flint. Some spotting to the fore-edge and just a few of the pages themselves, but only to the blank margins. Overall a nice clean set in attractive early leather bindings, for Hatchards bookshop, of Piccadilly in London. Half dark green calf. Spines with five raised bands, each with gilt piping. Compartments with geometric ruled lines and dots design, and lettering, all in gilt. Green cloth on boards. Gilt ruled lines to the edges of the cloth. Plain brown endpapers. Top edges gilt. A little rubbing to the binding and the spines faded a bit, but overall a very attractive and finely bound set. The bindings have Hatchards small ink stamp on the blank endpapers but no mention of the binder. Overall a very good set of this interesting and beautiful edition, which includes a Bibliographical Note by the editor, A. W. Pollard, Caxton's preface to the original edition of 1485, a glossary, and an index. --- Originally issued as four slim quarto volumes in a limited edition in 1910-11, this is the first issue in this format and is complete in 2 volumes.
