The Golden Jubilee that marked the first fifty years of Queen Victoria’s reign was celebrated on the 20 and 21 June 1887 in Britain. In India, to avoid the heat of the summer months, the celebration was marked on February 16. This proclamation by Hafiz Sheikh Abdul Kareem, Khan Bahadu of Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, northeast of Delhi, congratulates the Queen on her Jubilee, underlines the loyalty displayed towards her by both the author and his father, the previous Khan Bahadur, and announces the establishment of the “Victoria Jubilee Orphanage” in Meerut.
