Working in Gothic Revival, Pre-Raphaelite and Arts & Crafts styles, and using their own unusually wide range of proprietary pigments, Heaton, Butler & Bayne created some of the most memorable stained glass of the late 19th and early 20th centuries which can be found around the world, from the US and Canada to Australia and Africa — a list of known holdings from a 1932 catalogue is appended at rear.
Founded in 1852, the firm continued in family hands until 1953, when the last owner, a member of the Bayne family, died leaving only a nine-month-old son. Most of the company records seem to have been destroyed, and the history herein is compiled by his widow, Simone, from what remains.
