"Glocestriæ Comitatus olim sedes Dobunorum. SAXTON, Christopher. London: George Bishop & John Norton, 1610. This is beautiful vibrant and fine example of this map of Gloucestershire, reduced from Christopher Saxton's map. This was the first engraved map of the county, although with the Royal Arms of James I rather than Elizabeth I. It was engraved by William Hole for Camden's 'Britannia'. Old colour is uncommon in this series. The map includes 2 decorative cartouches and a compass rose. William Camden first issued his Britannia in 1586 but did not include maps until the 1607 edition. (This copy is very beautifully mounted and framed with attractive provenance vignette - glazed, 46cm x 48cm overall). PLEASE NOTE: All glazed and framed maps can be professionally recovered without damage should buyer prefers unframed.
