Book Description

two colour printed maps on one sheet; overall 34 x 53 cm, each heart 23 x 22 cm. - This matching pair of "geographical guides" depict a man's and a woman's heart, illuminating the social awareness of the time of the differences between the sexes with regards to love and relationships. The stark difference between the two begins even within the subtitles, with a man's described by "obstacles" and the woman's described as "romantic." The male heart is divided into regions such as State of Solid Comfort, State of Superiority, Country of Freewheeling and Area of Appetite, while the female heart includes Love of Love Land, Country of Conversation, State of Security, and Party Girl Province. Humor and stereotypes abound in these fanciful hearts, which were created by Jo Lowrey and published in the January 1960 issue of McCall's Magazine. These hearts were based on similar Victorian-era maps by the Kellogg Brothers of Connecticut. On the verso of the man's heart is a short article about the characteristics a man looks for in a woman. - References: PJ Mode Collection #1362.
