Dealer Notes
Several pens share the authorship of the ghostwritten Memoirs of Vidocq :
Vol. 1 is compiled from Vidocq's notes by Emile Morice (1797-1836).
Vol. 2, 3 and 4 are compiled from Vidocq’s notes by L.F. [Louis-François] L'Héritier (1789-1852).
According to the preface (dated 30 June 1830) by the Dutch publishers in vol. 7, the material for “The state inquisition, or so called high police [sûreté] in France, unmasked” i.e. volumes 7 and 8 was not taken from Vidocq's notes, but was collected by the brothers Diederichs themselves, "to expose the cancerous effect of secret police activities on the fabric of society". The compilation (no sources cited) largely derives from “La police dévoilée [unmasked], depuis la restauration, et notamment sous MM. Franchet et Delavau. (1829) By M. Froment, ex-chef de brigade du cabinet particulier du préfet [and by Louis Guyon, (lieutenant au 59e de ligne)]. The chapters on the press, bookselling, printing and seditious works are of particular interest.
J.M. Quérard, Les supercheries littéraires dévoilées (bibliography on revealed authorship) Vol. 3, col. 945e states that l'Heritier's aim in 'the last three volumes' of the work (vols. 2, 3, 4) which are entirely of his own composition, was to demonstrate the need for reform in the police force.
