Book Description
Published by Par Mr. D.M. Londres [ie. Amsterdam, Ray]. FIRST EDITION of this key radical text. 8vo. Pp [iv], 394,[2]. Full contemporary calf, a little rubbed to head and foot, marbled endpapers. The work appears to have been rather hastily bound and printed, perhaps through concerns about its potentially controversial content: gathering A is rather wrinkled, the whole book is slightly shaken, and there is an internal tear to the outer margin of 143/144 (with early repair), without loss. Nevertheless, text otherwise clean, priced accordingly. A rare and important volume.

Holbach (1723-1789) prominent French Enlightenment figure and encyclopaedist, who was known for his sceptical writings on religion. Courteous and well-connected, he maintained an intellectual salon which helped him hone his thoughts; this essai marks part of his way toward reaching the naturalistic position outlined later in his 'System'.
